Course Content
Firearm Safety
A detailed, practical breakdown of shotgun safety: muzzle discipline, safe loading/unloading, ammunition management, transportation, storage, and range etiquette.
Shotgun Types and Parts
Learn the differences between pump-action, semi-automatic, and break-action shotguns, plus key components and how each system operates.
Shotgun Ammunition
Understanding shotshell components, gauge selection, birdshot vs buckshot vs slugs, patterning basics, safe handling, and proper storage.
Fundamentals of Shotgun Shooting
Stance, mount, cheek weld, sight picture (bead/sights), recoil control, follow-through, and efficient manipulation—taught step-by-step and coached hands-on.
Marksmanship & Patterning
Practical shooting fundamentals applied to accuracy and consistency. Includes patterning concepts and what to look for when choosing loads.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Safe field-stripping basics (platform dependent), cleaning methods, lubrication, function checks, and storage practices to keep your shotgun reliable.
Legal and Ethical Considerations
Responsible ownership, safe use, lawful application of a shotgun for defensive purposes, and ethical decision-making.
Certification
Successful completion earns an NRA Basic Shotgun Course certificate, documenting your training and commitment to responsible firearm ownership.

Requirements
- Personally owned shotgun
- 25–50 shells birdshot (target loads) (confirm your gauge before purchase)
- 5–10 rounds of buckshot (optional if allowed on the range that day)
- 5–10 slugs (optional if allowed on the range that day)
- Gun case
